Prof. Dr. Andrew P. Hills
Andrew Hills is a leading educator, exercise scientist, and international authority on physical activity and obesity. He currently serves as Professor of Exercise and Sports Science at the University of Tasmania (UTAS), Australia. Since returning to UTAS in 2016, Professor Hills has held key academic leadership roles, including Deputy Dean Research and Associate Dean Global. Prior to this, he was Professor of Energy Metabolism at Queensland University of Technology, and later Professor of Allied Health Research at Mater Mothers’ Hospital, affiliated with the Mater Research Institute – The University of Queensland.
Over his career, Professor Hills has spearheaded numerous global initiatives addressing undernutrition and overnutrition in developing countries, notably through long-standing collaborations with the Division of Human Health at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He recently led Australia’s contribution to the Multicenter Infant Body Composition Reference Study (MIBCRS), co-funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. His expertise has been sought by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), where he has contributed to global strategies promoting healthy lifestyles.
A trailblazer in his field, Professor Hills was the first non-medical President of the Australia and New Zealand Obesity Society (ANZOS). He is a prolific scholar, having authored or edited 10 books and published more than 350 works on obesity, body composition, and related topics. His current research focuses on obesity prevention in mothers and young children, particularly across the critical first 2,000 days of life.
